ESET's SysRescue Live (v 1.0.14.0)

In this Video I highlight ESET's SysyRescue Live CD. It's a bootable anti-malware solution. It's free! The version shown in this Video is 1.0.14.0. Download and create the CD\DVD from the ISO Image. Then, with the newly created Disc still in the Drive, re-boot the Computer. Make sure the Computer is set to boot from the CD\DVD Drive or use the Boot Menu to select the CD\DVD Drive as the Boot Device. To access the Boot Menu, press either the F2, F12, Delete or Esc Key as soon as the Manufacturer's Splash Screen disappears. The actual Key to access the Boot Menu may be different on your System, but the previously listed are the most common.

When the ESET SysRescue Start-up Menu appears, (select) "Run ESET SysRescue" and press the Enter Key. That will start ESET SysRescue. Make sure the Computer has Internet Access at this time, so the Program can check for the latest Virus Definition available.

Now, that the Program has started, it will be necessary to agree to the EULA and set a couple of Settings to get into the Heart of the Program. I set the "Live Grid" Option to Enable (requires an active Internet Connection) and set "Potentially Un-wanted Programs" to Enable. Then, accept the EULA and start using the SysRescue Program.

Once the SysRescue Main Menu appears, make sure the Heading "Home" is high-lighted, then check the version of the Virus Database and make sure it's Date of Creation is current. If it is not, (select) the "Update" Heading and force a manual Update from with-in it.

When the latest Definitions have been acquired, (select) the "On Demand Scanning" Heading and (select) either "Smart Scan" or "In-Depth". I always (select) "In-Depth". In-Depth is just that, so with this Option all Files will be scanned. That will increase Scan Time. A Smart Scan only scans Files that have been deemed infectable. What is and isn't infectable changes frequently, that's the main reason I use the Custom Scan Option with a Profile of In-Depth. If I'm going to go through the trouble to scan a System, I want all possible Files scanned. For "Scan Targets", I always choose all available Options. Then, I further define the Scan Options by (selecting) the "Setup" Button.

The Scan Setup Section of the Program contains several Headings or more precisely Tabs. The first is the Objects Tab, I (select) all available Objects. The next Tab is the Options Tab, again I (select) all. Moving on to the Cleaning Tab. This Setting will be set based on whether or not the User wants any infected Files to be flagged, cleaned or destroyed. The Extensions Tab is where any types of Files can be excluded from the Scan. The next Tab is the Limits Tab, here the maximum Size of the Files to be scanned can be manipulated. As well as, the depth of scanning for any compressed or archived Files (zip files) and if System Files are included or excluded (mostly for Linux OSs). The last Tab is Other. Under this Tab I just make sure Enable Smart Scan is not checked and leave the others checked. As stated before, I don't like to limit the File Types or Places that are scanned. Then (select) OK and that will return the Program to the Custom Scan Menu. Then I (select) the Scan Button. With these Setting the Scan will usually take quite a bit of Time, so prepare for that.

A known clean Computer and Internet Connection to download and create Media with. The ability to create Media from an ISO Image using either a CD, DVD or USB Drive. A Back-up of all critical Files and the Operating System.
